Celebrating Arbor Day & Tree City USA!
Thanks to all who came out for the Village of Bronxville's Arbor Day Celebration on April 24th at the Bronxville Giving Garden! Bronxville is proud to be certified as a Tree City USA.
Mayor Mary Marvin, Trustee Helen Knapp, Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, Village Administrator Jim Palmer and Bronxville Green Committee Chair Ellen Edwards were in attendance to kick off the event which included the planting of a Black Tupelo tree on Village lawn.
In addition, free compost, red maple tree saplings and information about food scrap recycling was available. We love Arbor Day!
Tree City USA
Bronxville is proud to once again be recognized as a Tree City USA community. In 1976, the Abor Day Foundation began the Tree City USA program to provide communities with a framework to maintain and grow their tree cover and to celebrate their work and their commitment to the environment. Today, more than 3,600 communities participate from all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.
There are many reasons why this designation and protecting Bronxville’s trees are important.
Trees help to:
Mitigate climate change
Reduce flooding and provide cooling
Remove air pollution and muffle noise
Provide privacy for our homes and habitat for wildlife
Contribute to our mental and physical well-being
Increase property values
The native Black Tupelo tree will grow 30-50 feet tall and produce gorgeous fall colors, small white blossoms in late spring that native bees love, and black fruit to feed all sorts of wildlife in the fall. It will help shade and cool this corner of the Village, soak up rainwater, clean the air, nourish the soil, and add to our tree canopy.
